Not-a-Portable Computers

Not-a-Portable
094/2897 October 11, 2003

A display of the IBM 5100 "Portable" -- which is not, despite the name, a portable computer as one would think of portables today. You have to understand the context of the time to understand what was meant by "portable" in this instance. Think of room-sized computers requiring dedicated power systems and air conditioning, and then think how IBM might have marketed a computer that fit on a desk, needed no air conditioning, plugged into a standard power outlet, and did not need specialized computer movers if the office was being moved or reorganized.
