Priorities, People, Priorities!
What does it say about our society when, in times of economic hardship, the first thing we do is cut funding for education, children's services, and healthcare for kids? Are we saying that those are the least important services our tax dollars pay for? Is there nothing else we could cut first? I'm thinking that, oh, road repair might be a bit less critical? Perhaps animal care and control could be scaled back? I have nothing against animals, but given a choice, I'd take care of the human kids first. How about cutting off cable TV and internet access for prison inmates? If they're bored, they could always read a book. Of course, there's always the option of generating additional income. Perhaps we could increase parking fees or fines for speeding and running red lights? Why not make the fee for parking in a disabled parking place without a valid placard a thousand dollars? How about two thousand? Too much? Then don't park there. Don't like the idea of a $5k ticket for running a red light? Stop when it turns yellow. But why would we cut funding for schools? For healthcare for poor kids? Recreation and Park directors? Aren't our children the most important thing we've got? |
