Uncle Roger's Notebooks of Daily Life

Introduction

My life is, to me, ripe with frequent challenges, occasional successes, spontaneous laughter, adequate tears, and enough *life* to last me a lifetime. To you, however, it surely seems most pedestrian. And therefore, I recycle the name I used previously and call this my Notebooks of Daily Life. Daily, because it's everyday in nature, ordinary. These conglomeration of events that are my life are of interest to me because I live it, perhaps mildly so to those who are touched by it, and could only be of perverse, morbid curiosity to anyone else. Yet, I offer them here nonetheless. Make of them what you will, and perhaps you can learn from my mistakes.

Deaf, Dumb, and Blind Kid

While we were in Calistoga, my glasses broke. A trip to the local optometrist and some crazy glue didn't help, so I wandered around blind all week.

It was odd -- I kept wanting to put my glasses on, not remembering they were broken. Another thing I noticed (and have noticed before) is that my hearing seems to deteriorate when I don't have my glasses. I don't know if that really happens or if it's all in my head, so to speak, but it seems unlikely that it's anything more than a heightened subconscious awareness of my usual piss-poor hearing -- perhaps I read lips more than I'm aware. Still, I certainly notice it.

My eyesight is not so bad that I can't drive, but I can't read roadsigns far enough in advance to find my way on my own. That's not a problem for going to work, but we did take a wrong turn on the way home.

Working will be interesting; I do still have the lens for my right eye -- the one that works -- but I may have to do some work to get the frame to stay in place.

Tomorrow, however, I'll go in and order new glasses. I meant to do that last Monday, but I ran out of time. I may end up hitting a LensCrafters to get a pair right away.
