Uncle Roger's Notebooks of Daily Life

Introduction

My life is, to me, ripe with frequent challenges, occasional successes, spontaneous laughter, adequate tears, and enough *life* to last me a lifetime. To you, however, it surely seems most pedestrian. And therefore, I recycle the name I used previously and call this my Notebooks of Daily Life. Daily, because it's everyday in nature, ordinary. These conglomeration of events that are my life are of interest to me because I live it, perhaps mildly so to those who are touched by it, and could only be of perverse, morbid curiosity to anyone else. Yet, I offer them here nonetheless. Make of them what you will, and perhaps you can learn from my mistakes.

What is Music?

The subject of Rap Music came up today. I voiced my opinion that it is not truly music, per se, but rather a form of spoken word. Craig disagreed heartily. His definition of music requires only rhythm, while mine includes a need for melody as well. A little research shows we might both be right -- or at least within the acceptable range of values.

Free Protection

I've been infected with spyware on a number of occasions, and once, I even caught a virus. (I meant to type DEL [virusname] and somehow left off the DEL.) Luckily, however, there is help out there for both these problems.

I use Spybot Search and Destroy, but I've also heard good things about Ad-Aware. In fact, the recommendation I've heard most is to install and use both regularly. For virus protection, I use AVG Anti-Virus. All of these are available free of charge for personal use.

I strongly recommend downloading and installing Spybot and Ad-Aware at the very least and, if you don't have other virus protection software installed, AVG as well.

Now, while all of these are available as paid versions, they all make the key functionality available free for ordinary folks. Businesses are required to pony up for the paid versions, but they want to make sure that the rest of us are protected. For that, I offer up a hearty thanks!

Vigilanteism

Last night, I shot a thief. Rachel spotted him stealing cans and bottles from the neighbor's recycling bins. I handed her Sara, went outside, walked right up to him, and shot him.
